Born: 10-08-2000, Represents: Denmark, Sport: Canoe Marathon (K1, K2).
- 2018: K1 and K2 Gold – Junior World Marathon Championships, Portugal
In front of a huge crowd in Prado Vila Verde, Denmark’s Thorbjorn Rask claimed two extraordinary victories in the K1 and K2 Junior men’s divisions at the Marathon World Championships, capping off a huge season for the 18 year-old.
Going into the K1 event as one of the favourites, Rask executed a near perfect race plan. After running away in the first portage, he was able hold a fair gap on the rest of the field, eventually winning the 22.6km race in a time of 1:39.22.89, 38.4 seconds clear of second place.
The next day in the K2 he teamed up with countryman Nikolai Thomsen where the race went totally different. Battling it out with a group of four for much of the race, the pair were able to time their finish perfectly as they sprinted off the wash in the final straight and into the finish line, winning the event by 14.04 seconds ahead of Spain and South Africa.
Thorbjorn is known as a down to earth and humble champion who is always willing to help out. Old and young paddlers alike look up to him and know that if you work as hard as you can, you have every chance of success.
As a result of his achievements in 2018, Thorbjorn Rask has been nominated for the 2018 Sports Junior of the year award.
