Olympian and coach Roberto de Angelo has dedicated his life to the sports of Canoe Slalom and Down River, achieving many national titles and helping countless up-and-coming paddlers achieve their own Olympic dreams. As an athlete in the 60s and 70s, he gained 24 national championships in Italy in both disciplines and participated in 13 world championships. He finished 12th in the K-1 Slalom event at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
As a coach, Roberto has elevated the sport of Canoe Slalom to a very high level in Italy, preparing trainers through technical development programs and coaching young athletes to success on the world stage, winning medals at all major slalom championships including Senior, U23 and Junior World Championships, the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, among others. Over the years, he has held numerous prestigious coaching positions, including head coach, individual coach and technical director for national down river and slalom teams preparing for the Olympics and other international events.
Since 2010, Roberto has been with the Centre for Studies and Research of the Italian Federation of Canoeing and Kayaking, where he is responsible for the Technical Centre of Reference in Ivrea, near Turin. He currently works with youth clubs and individually with several Italian and foreign national athletes, helping them develop in the sport. A top-tier trainer, Roberto is also a Master of Canoe and Master of Country Ski.
