At a time when Waveski Surfing is taking the paddle sports world by storm, newly-crowned World and French Waveski champion Oceane Lucas is riding high.
Growing up in Les Sables d’Olonne, France, Oceane was involved in paddle sports almost before she could walk. It all started with her father Gérard Lucas, (former coach of the French National Waveski team), who got her into surfing the waves on a kayak with him when she was just a toddler. Oceane took to the sea like a natural, participating in surfing, paddling and kite-surfing. Four years ago, she started competitive Waveski—and just like that, she’s a world champion.
It’s an exciting time for athletes like Oceane to be involved in the sport with many young riders pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Waveski has enormous potential as a paddlesport, both for able-bodied athletes at the elite and recreational level, and for athletes with a disability looking to pursue adaptive surfing.
Off the water, Oceane is an entrepreneur. She runs a canoe paddle kayak school in Talmont Saint Hilaire and has also created a ‘Paddle Adventure’ association that allows her to give Waveski surfing classes and organize courses and competitions for youth in her city. Her mid- to long-term goals are to continue to develop the sport of Waveski both by continuing to win international titles and by being an ambassador for the sport as she travels the world spreading the joys of Waveski.
TESTIMONIAL/QUOTE:
“I want to spread the word about the joys of Waveski and develop the discipline by continuing to travel around the world, promoting it through beautiful videos and demonstrations. It’s a wonderful sport and it deserves so much more recognition.” — Oceane Lucas
