At only 20 years of age, Martina Satkova is already an international star, with a resume of results most canoeists can only dream of. In 2018 alone, the wildwater paddler from the Czech Republic snagged a grand total of seven medals at the Wildwater Canoeing World Championships in Switzerland—the most medals ever won at a single event by any World Paddle Awards nominee (2014-2018).
Wildwater is one of the most physically demanding paddlesport disciplines that requires a raw power, speed, technique and tactic, four traits that can take years to discover and develop. Martina Satkova makes these look easy.
In her final year of junior competition in 2016 Martina finished on a high by winning four medals in individual events, three gold and one silver, at the Junior Wildwater European Championships. In 2017, at the U23 World Championships in Austria, she added five more medals to her collection, with gold in the C1 Classic, bronze in the K1 Classic, gold in both K1 and C1 Team events and another gold in the K1 Sprint, thereby cementing her place in the top ranks of international competition.
Showing her versatility, Martina is also a member of the Czech Republic Canoe Slalom team and competes in the C1 event as well as the boater-cross.
“Canoeing is my life, my hobby and my pleasure. I want to be a role model for young athletes and to share my success. Canoeing teaches me to be purposeful and competitive, but also to play fair. I also have to learn from my failures. Yes, it is a sport, but it is so much fun!” — Martina Satkova
