At the relatively young age of 34, Colin Radmore has already dedicated 20 years of his life to competing and coaching. Regarded as one of the best paracanoe coaches in the world, Colin is no slouch at Canoe Slalom himself, having achieved a brace of European and World Championship medals before retiring from competition at the tender age of 26.
Colin has been the senior coach on the paracanoe team since the sport was introduced on the international circuit in 2012. Playing a key role in setting up the performance program, Colin has coached 15 athletes to 40 international medals, with the team consistently topping the medal tables.
Colin is fully committed to creating and leading the best team around his athletes which in turn has led to much international success. He understands every aspect of the sport, from the first steps on the talent pathway right through to the rewards of coaching Emma Wiggs to Paralympic Gold and more recently Charlotte Henshaw to World Championship gold this year.
Colin’s coaching philosophy is to develop the person behind the athlete. He works closely with each of his squad individually to makes sure he understands their needs emotionally, personally and physically both away from the sport as well as part of their training.
This season his athletes have won 7 international medals, including Charlotte Henshaw’s gold medal at the World Championships and Jack Eyres claiming an impressive bronze medal in his debut World Championships, both having taken up the sport just 18 months ago.
This season Colin has been challenged with integrating a second discipline into his program following the inclusion of va’a into the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. His success in coaching both men and women to international medals, in two disciplines kayak and va’a, demonstrates his ability as a technical coach and the importance he places on an athlete-centred approach.
QUOTE/TESTIMONIAL:
“I’ve worked with Colin since I moved from Para-swimming in early 2017. Having come from a sport I knew well and a coach I’d worked with for nearly 18 years, I was very apprehensive, but Colin immediately made me feel at ease. His knowledge, guidance and willingness to learn with me, have allowed me to made an extremely quick transition into a medal-winning paddler and given me the confidence to continue to progress as we head towards Tokyo.” — Charlotte Henshaw, Paracanoe World Champion.
