Casper Steinfath is the man putting Denmark on the SUP map. With many amazing results already to his name, this year he became the 200m SUP Sprint Race World Champion, delivering a commanding performance in front of a home crowd.
Calling his win a fairy tale and a dream come true, Casper's win in front of an energetic and vocal home crowd was also aired live on Danish national television. This victory was his second consecutive Sprint Title and fifth ISA SUP Racing Title and was another historic moment for the sport of SUP and Denmark.
In addition to this emphatic victory, he was also the first European to win a Stand Up World Series event when he won the 2016 Victoria Cup in Japan. Add to this his multiple World and European titles and you have the man most likely to disrupt the Hawaiian dominance at the top of the SUP scene.
Amongst these world beating efforts, in February 2017 he also attempted to go where no paddler has gone before by paddling 130km across the legendary Skagerrak Strait. The first 12 hours of the journey, which is the same route his Viking ancestors travelled, from his hometown Klitmøller (Cold Hawaii) to Kristiansand in the southern part of Norway, started off very strongly. However, when we was met with plummeting temperatures and dangerous winds and temperatures the situation quickly deteriorated and he was forced to call off the mission, just 14km from the finish line. Despite this, he is already eyeing off another attempt at the crossing.
Casper is also the feature of a multiple award winning film, Standing on Water, which is a story of overcoming your fears and following your passion. It's the journey of how Casper, despite his fear of water, became one of the best stand up paddle surfers in the world.
As a result of all of these outstanding achievements, Casper Steinfath is a deserving nominee for the 2017 Sportsman of the Year award.
