The Italian men's canoe polo team relished the opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd, beating the competition favorites, France, in a sold out final at this years Canoe Polo World Championships in Sicily, Italy.
France, who have won a medal at the last five world championships, put up a strong battle but when the match went into overtime the Italian's home advantage proved too strong. The nail-biting finish saw Edward Corvaia score a golden goal to secure a 6-5 win to Italy.
During the tournament Luca Bellini, captain of the Italian team, scored a total 27 personal goals. A record!
The Italians are known to wear their hearts on their sleeves, and at the conclusion of the match this was evident. The emotions they were displaying showed how hard they had worked towards this shared goal of theirs. As well as being able to stand on top of the dais, this win also saw the teams names etched in the history books as Italy’s first Canoe Polo World Champions.
These men’s passion for paddle sports and ‘never say die’ attitude embody what the World Paddle Awards is all about. As gold medalists and National heroes they are deserving nominees for the Sportsman of the Year award.
