SERGHEI TARNOVSCHU (MOLDOVA) - Nominee for the 2015 'Sports Junior of the Year' award.

  • Born: 1997, Sports: Canoe Sprint (C1), Represents: Moldova
  • 2015: 3rd C1 1000m Senior World Championships, 1st C1 1000m & 3rd C1 200m Junior World Championships.
  • 2014: 1st C1 head-to-head sprint Youth Olympic Games Nanjing, China.

The future is looking bright for young (Junior) Moldovan Canoeist Serghei Tarnovschi after winning a bronze medal in the C1 1000m at the senior sprint canoe championships in Milan.

In a closely fought battle the 18-year-old went through the first 250m in first place before slipping to second place for the next 500m. He held on in the last 250 metres to finish third behind Sebastian Brendel of Germany and Martin Fuksa of the Czech Republic in a time of 3:51.583s. This placing secured his country a qualification spot for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Earlier in the season Serghei won the C1 1000m at the U23 World Championships, 4 seconds ahead of second place getter Vladislav Chebotar of Russia. He then lined up for the C1 200m, his less preferred event, to finish a credible third place.

In 2014 Serghei attended the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, where he won a gold medal and was crowned the Youth Olympic Champion for the C1 head-to-head sprint. This was the first gold medal to be won by Moldova.

The dedication and determination Serghey has is well beyond his years. He believes that every ones of his victories act as a motivator for him. If he can win at one championship then he will strive to replicate the same result at another.

To win a medal at Senior World Championship level is an achievement many sprint canoeists can only dream of, to do it as an 18-year-old shows just how much potential Serghei Tarnovschi has.

Serghei Tarnovschi has been nominated for 'Sports Junior of the Year' due to his remarkable results in both the Junior and Senior World Championships. With the support of his country, expect to see his name feature for many years to come.
