NATIONAL STUDENT RODEO (Great Britain) - Nominee for 2015 Industry Professional.

Website: www.nationalstudentrodeo.org.uk, Facebook

The National Student Rodeo is said to be the largest kayaking festival in the world. Each year it has students from all over the UK descend on Nottingham for an enjoyable weekend of kayaking and partying.

At NSR there are approximately 1000 (Limited to 1000 by health and safety) people who compete in the range of freestyle competitions on the National White Water Course at Holme Pierrepont.

Due to the nature of University kayaking clubs the paddlers can sometimes be new to the sport. In response to this there are numerous fun challenges where technical skill is less important with a emphasis of everybody having fun on the water.

There is beginner, intermediate, expert freestyle competitions for both men and women for students with C1 and Squirt classes included. There is also a duo event, which consists of some racing and a freestyle Jam.

For non-students there is an Old School competition where paddlers are rewarded for wearing retro gear and performing freestyle tricks in some of the first white water kayaks.

Whilst NSR does not get the media attention of some other events, it is notorious in the UK kayaking calendar for all young paddlers. Guest speakers such as expedition kayaking legend Dave Manby and other top level kayakers often attend the presentations.

NSR is one of few competitions that caters and encourages all ability’s to attend a single event, and it is for this reason that it deserves the Industry Professional award. Its dedication to allowing inclusion and giving all university paddlers the chance to enjoy competing at freestyle kayaking is something that more events should aspire to.
