Jeff Moag - American
Jeff Moag - Member of the World Paddle Awards Academy
Jeff was the former editor of Canoe & Kayak Magazine, the world’s largest paddling publication. Based in the United States, C&K is a broad-interest magazine covering every facet of our sport, with particular emphasis on sea kayaking, open canoeing and whitewater. In connection with his work for C&K, Jeff led the team that founded SUP Magazine (USA) and serves as Executive Editor of Kayak Fish magazine and director of the annual C&K Awards.
Jeff is a jack of all paddling trades, and a master of none. His first passion is whitewater kayaking, and he loves nothing more than a technical Class IV creek. He also enjoys multi-day wilderness trips in canoes, sea kayaks and whitewater boats, choosing whichever craft is best suited to the route. Lately, his most enjoyable paddling experiences have been on calm water with his two young daughters.
As an athlete, Jeff represented the United States in the sport of rowing, competing in the 1993 and 1994 World Championships in the lightweight 8+ and lightweight 2-. A knee injury ended his rowing career, and Jeff now satisfies his need for speed in his one-man outrigger canoe, chasing ocean swells near his home in Dana Point, California. He also is an avid surfer.
Trained as a journalist at the University of Oregon, Jeff spent 10 years as an investigative reporter in Washington, D.C., before following his love of paddling into sports publishing. He served as Managing Editor of Paddler magazine before joining C&K in 2006. He covered sprint canoe, slalom canoe and rowing for American broadcaster NBC at the Athens and Beijing Olympic Games.
Jeff made Canoe & Kayak a venue for all paddlers to share their love of the sport. The magazine and its website canoekayak.com celebrates all aspects of our sport, from quiet family trips to whitewater first descents and world-class competition.
Jeff left his post as editor of Canoe & Kayak in 2016 but continues to work with the magazine as an editor-at-large. Most of his focus going forward will be freelance work for a variety of clients, both inside and outside of paddlesports.
