London 2012 Olympic Champion in K1W 200m, Lisa Carrington from Tauranga, New Zealand has achieved so much in kayak sprint singles and remarkably is still only 25! With 40.528 seconds, she set her a new Olympic record over 200m in her semi-final run.
And what an incredible 2014 season she had; not only did she defend her 200m world title in Moscow, she also took away double gold at Milan in both 200m and 500m.
In 2013 Lisa won gold in the same 200m event at every World Cup in the season; this is something that very few an athlete have been able to do! Triple Crown!
With regards to other disciplines, Lisa has paddled doubles and fours, even winning gold with fellow countrywoman Teaneale Hatton in K2W 1000m at the 2010 World Cup in Vichy, France and not forgetting also representing New Zealand at London 2012 in K2 500m with Erin Taylor in addition to the 200m.
She was the first woman from New Zealand to ever win a World Championship race in canoe sprint; she did so with gold in K1W 200m at Szeged in 2011.
Lisa started paddling through surf lifesaving aged 16, she went on to win the national surfski title in 2011 and still continues to lifesave and ocean-race for pleasure.
Activities and achievements off the water:
- Awarded the highest honour for sport in New Zealand; becoming a Member of the Order of Merit
- Other honours extend to being 2012 Maori Sportsperson and Senior Maori Sportswoman of the Year following her success at the London Olympics
- Motto: 'What hurts more? Missing a party for training, or missing out on an Olympic medal?”
- Nicknamed 'Lis', she studied at Whakatane High School and at Massey University, Albany, NZ.
