Brazilian pocket-rocket Ana Sátila could well be the face of Rio 2016. She ticks all the boxes on the must-have list for athletic stardom. She is dedicated, talented, charming and a local favourite for the upcoming Olympics.

Ana’s 2014 season started spectacularly, when she won the Junior World Championship K1 women’s title, in Penrith, Australia. Ana displayed her ability to diversify by finishing in 4th place in the C1W event, only narrowly missing out on another medal.

Ana was born in Iturama, in Brazil, almost 800km away from where she now lives and trains at the national training centre in Foz do Iguaçu. She began training as a swimmer as a four year old, but moved on to canoe slalom when she was nine. Ana won her first Brazilian National Championship when she was only twelve, and has gone on blasting her competition out of the water since then.

Ana qualified against competitors much older and more experienced than herself, to compete at the London 2012 Olympic Games. At only 15, Ana was one of the youngest competitors, and still finished a very respectable 16th.

Ana travels the international circuit each year with the Brazilian team, which is otherwise entirely made up of male athletes and coaches. She is a gracious and determined competitor, who leaves nothing behind when she’s on the racecourse.

At the senior level Ana’s results are steadily improving in K1 and she is consistently making the final in C1. Her race season ended on another high note, when she finished in 11th position at the Deep Creek World Championships, no small feat for an eighteen year old. She was only .06 seconds out of the final.

Ana Sátila is one to watch out for – she has been nominated for the ‘Sports Junior of the Year’ award for her sensational results at both the junior and senior level in 2014.
