After a season of racing like no other, Cory Hill has cemented his name in the history books forever. With numerous wins across a range of races and series including the Ocean Racing World Championships and Australian Ocean Racing Series, it was his win at the 2018 Molokai Challenge that showed he is a force to be reckoned with.
Cory ‘Chill’ Hill comes from a Surf Lifesaving background and competes for Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club. As his nickname ‘Chill’ suggests, he has a laid-back approach to training and racing which has seen him become one of the most loved faces on and off the beach. For many years Cory trained to be an Ironman, where he appeared in the 2009 and 2011 Kellogg’s Nutrigrain Ironman Series and placed 2nd in the 2010 Coolangatta Gold. In 2013 Cory turned his focus to surf ski paddling, where he has gone from strength to strength.
With his maiden international win being the 2015 Molokai Surf Ski World Championships, it was only matter of time before he pushed the boundaries and cemented his name as one of the best ocean ski paddlers in history. At the 2018 Molokai Championships, Cory did just this.
With the ‘who’s who’ of ocean paddling lined up and favourable swell and tide on offer, the stage was set for a euphoric battle. With the lead pack all being quite close together throughout the race, Cory was able to break away in the final stages to finish in a time of 3:15.09 which broke the 21-year-old record of 3:21.26 set by fellow Australian Dean Gardiner. Proving just how strong this field was, a further five paddlers also went under the previous race record time.
To add to his long list of Ocean Racing accolades throughout this season, Cory also won the World Ocean Racing Championships in Hong Kong in November 2017 (2018 for the WPA season) and took out the overall Australian Ocean Racing Series point score which saw him record wins in The Chucky, Pacifica Downwind, Moon Island Classic, Life Flight Ocean Paddle, The Doctor and Palm to Pine. In addition to this Cory also placed 2nd in the Gorge Downwind Championships and 3rd in the Canadian Downwind Championships.
