TOM LIEBSCHER (Germany) - Nominee for the 2017 Sportsman of the Year Award

Born: 1993, sport(s): canoe sprint, represents: Germany
2017: Gold K1 1000m & K4 500m (Racice)
2016: Gold K4 1000m Olympic Games (Rio)
2015: Silver K1 500m World Championships (Milan)

Tom Liebscher is still only young but already has a resume full of incredible results. At this year's World Championships, he yet again proved his prowess by winning the K1 1000m and K4 500m in two of the most exciting races on the program. As a result of these successes he is being nominated for the 2017 WPA Sportsman of the Year award.

Being dubbed as one of the best K1 1000m races in history, Tom used his speed and went out hard from the start before settling into the middle of the race. With two men pulling away from the field, Tom looked to be in a race for third through the final 250m but then he produced arguably one of the best finishes ever, coming over the top of his competitors in the final 25 metres. Then in the K4 500m, it was a race in two with the Germans going head to head with the Spanish team. After a solid kick with 150m to go, much like in his K1 1000m final, the Germans powered home to victory in a world's best time of 1:17.73s.

As one of the diverse paddlers, Tom has won Championship medals in the 200m, 500m and 1000m events over the past few years. In the 2017 season, in addition to his two World Championship medals, he took home two gold medals at the World Cup events. Last season at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games he won the K4 1000m and was 5th in a tight K2 200m final and also won two World Cup and two European Championship medals.

Starting his international success off with a silver medal at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, Tom has been relatively unstoppable since. After initially establishing himself as a sprinter, Tom has since shown he is able to produce results over each Olympic distance in all boats. With less than three years until the Olympic Games in Tokyo, we are excited to see what Tom can produce.
