JAROSLAV POLLERT SENIOR & JAROSLAV POLLERT JUNIOR - Nominee for 2016 ‘Industry Professional’ Award.
Born: 1943 & 1971, Disciplines: canoe slalom and downriver, Represents: Czech Republic.
The father-son team of Jaroslav Pollert Senior and Junior are responsible for innovations used in the modelling of various artificial Olympic and other whitewater courses, including the course built for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
With both men being World Champions in canoe slalom (Jaroslav Pollert Senior: C2 1965, 1973, C1 team 1961; Jaroslav Pollert Junior: C2 team 1995, 1999, 2003, 2006), their practical racing experience combined with their scientific knowledge has allowed them to assist with the development of some of the best slalom courses in the world. The courses they have provided technical advice for include: Sydney 2000 Olympic course, Rio 2016 Olympic course, Prague Troja course, Auckland Vector Wero Whitewater Park, as well as a new facility being designed for events in Tokyo in 2020.
Professor Jaroslav Pollert Sr. and Doctor Jaroslav Pollert Jr. both work in the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University. Within their roles, both men are experts in water engineering. Their expertise in hydraulic modelling is demonstrated in ensuring that the spatial layout, elevation and length of each model is correct, establishing proposed water flows, developing systems for obstacle analysis, and calculating the speed, direction, depth, and behavior of the modelled water.
Recently they worked on a model for the Rio 2016 Slalom Course that helped establish an obstacle configuration that would meet all the necessary Olympic technical requirements. For this modelling work Jaroslav Pollert Jr. and his team received the International Olympic Committee Sports and Innovation Award that is awarded to original and innovative work that contributes to the development of sports.
Outside of their work developing courses with the Czech Technical University, both men are still actively involved with canoeing. Jaroslav Pollert Jr. still competes, and recently placed second at the Czech Cup races in C2 with Marek Jiras. His father, Jaroslav Pollert Sr. is the current Vice President of the European Canoe Association and has held various other positions including President of Czechoslovak Canoe Federation (1990-1992), Vice-President of Czech Canoe Union (1993), Member of Executive Committee of Czechoslovak Olympic Committee from (1990-1992), Representative for Europe (1992-1996) and Chairman of the ICF Slalom Committee (1996-2000).
