RENE HOLTEN POULSEN (Denmark) - Nominee for the 2015 'Sportsman of the Year' award.
- Born: 28th November 1988, Sport: Canoe Sprint, Represents: Denmark.
- 2015: double World Champion in the K1 500m and K1 1000m at the World Championships in Milan.
- 2014: gold K1 500m and bronze K1 1000m at the World Championships in Moscow.
Becoming a double World Champion in the K1 1000m and K1 500m is a feat that a select few of the worlds best sprint kayakers have achieved in their careers, and to do it in the same year is considered a superhuman feat. Rene Holten Poulsen achieved just that this year, cementing his name in history.
The 26 year-old from Bagsværd, Denmark has a long list of achievements including an Olympic silver medal in the K2 1000m from the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 15 European Championship medals but it is this result that has placed him amongst an elite list of paddlers, just one year out from the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
With his sights firmly set on winning Gold at the World Championships, Rene’s 2015 campaign was very strong and undoubtedly his best season to date. He has subsequently become the most successful Danish sprint canoeist in history.
At the European Championships in Racice Poulsen picked up two golds in the non-Olympic distances of K1 500m and K1 5000m but it was his silver medal in the K1 1000m (Olympic event) that set him up for an extraordinary season.
Skipping the first two World Cups, Poulsen then snared a Silver medal in the K1 1000m in front of a home crowd at World Cup 3 in Copenhagen along with a gold in the K1 500m.
A qualified carpenter, he then turned his focus to the inaugural European Games in Baku. In a closely fought race, with only 0.6s separating the top three places, Rene finished third. With the top spot on the podium still eluding him for the 2015 season, there was only one more place to achieve it, the World Championships in Milan.
With a strong preparation these World Championships were sure to be memorable for Rene. Leading from start to finish, he showed his power and class to win the K1 1000m and become the World Champion in a world class time of 3:25.815. The following day he replicated this race plan to secure the K1 500m and the illustrious double victory.
But it’s not just success in the single boat he is targeting. After a disappointing World Championships in the K2 1000m Rene and his partner Nils Boe headed to Rio for the Olympic Test Event where they stood on the top of the podium against a world class field. He also was placed 2nd in the K1 1000m.
With only one year until the 2016 Olympic Games Rene Holten Poulsen is the man to beat.
