Many of you will have heard of Claire O’hara’s (1981) remarkable victories as a freestyle athlete. Claire has five ICF World Championship titles to her name, making her the most successful British freestyle kayaker in history and the most successful female freestyle kayaker in the world. It would take an entire page to document Claire’s freestyle results, but they are only a small part of why she has been nominated for this award.

Claire has experience in almost every discipline of the sport and has paddled on rivers around the world. She holds a degree in sports development and is a CRB approved outdoor instructor, first aid trainer and assessor, and sports coach. Claire’s impressive capabilities make her assistance invaluable at all levels of the sport, on committees, as a coach, judge, event organiser, athlete and in the media.

Claire is a member of the GB Freestyle Committee, the BCU Freestyle Technical Committee and the GB Freestyle Team. She has judged at many local, national and international events, including World Championships, World Cups, European Championships and British Championships. She has also assisted in judge training seminars in the UK and Europe for the BCU and the ICF.

Despite being a full time athlete Claire makes time to help run and organise events, to develop educational resources and coaching tools and to help coach paddlers of all ages and abilities around the world. In the last twelve months she has coached, mentored and supported paddlers and athletes and been involved in events and projects in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Africa and across the UK.

Claire is a well-known face, name and brand in paddlesports media; she is also a regular contributor through her blog, interviews, articles, sponsors’ websites and social media. Claire shares her stories, adventures and tales, motivating others to follow their own dreams.

Claire is an inspiration to many people across the globe because of her attitude, image, success and lifestyle. She is respected for her talent, her character and for being a drug and alcohol free athlete living the ultimate paddler's dream. She lives her life with clear ethical boundaries and a passion for what she does. She is generous with her time for others, always ready with a smile, modest about her achievements and ever grateful to live the life she leads.   

Claire is an asset to the world of paddlesports and an inspirational athlete and role model. She has been nominated for the ‘Paddlesport Professional’ award because of her substantial input to the sport at all levels.
